CENTRAL KIOSKS
Description
Central (vertical) kiosks throughout the Zap! Surgery Exhibit are generally very uniform / standard. Without specific mention, these kiosks have largely been treated herein as integral parts of the other previously described modules / components. The central kiosks usually support the activity tables on both sides by presenting text panels that define the module and sub-area, holding plasma monitors, and supporting overhead speaker booms.
Primary Components
The primary operational components (excluding items such as plasma monitors listed / described previously as primary components specific to individual exhibit pieces) typically include:
Table 1 provides details about components that actually are physically contained in the central kiosks, versus those that are physically contained in a related activity table. For instance, although a plasma monitor is described in this manual as a primary component in the section for Cryogenics - Cool Surgery, the monitor actually is physically housed in the associated central kiosk.
Consumables / Spare Parts
No consumables other than air filters are associated with the central kiosks. Table 2 lists available spare parts.

Maintenance
Maintenance is simple and involves ventilation/air filtering, lighting, and general cleaning. Table 3 details specific maintenance steps and their frequency. It also serves as a tool to document completion of maintenance.
Troubleshooting
Replacing fluorescent lamps behind large text panels: The large center text panels on the kiosks are hinged at the top. To access burned out lamps (or plasma monitors on applicable kiosks) , first loosen the single hex head screw located at the bottom, center of the panel (Fig. 44). Next, simultaneously pull the bottom edge of the panel out toward the activity table and upward. Carefully prop the center panel up with the black painted wood piece (Fig. 45) that also is used on the Laser – Match ‘Em exhibit, or ask another staff member to hold the panel. Replace applicable lamps with a like one from Zap spares. When finished replacing lamps, remember to replace the hex head screw at the bottom, center of the panel to secure it from unauthorized visitor access.

Replacing fluorescent lamps / fixtures behind side text panels: The two small, side text panels on each center kiosk are hinged on one side and are kept closed with ball catches. To access burned out lamps / fixtures, pull carefully on the side edges of the text panel to locate the side with the catch. Swing the text panel open (Fig. 46) and first attempt to replace the lamp with a like one from Zap spares. If a new lamp does not correct the problem and the fixture is suspect, first make certain that the replacement lamp is good by trying it another working fixture.

Once the fixture is determined to be bad, replace it with a new one from Zap spares. Cut the new fixture’s power cord to the length necessary so that the replacement fixture can be connected at the terminal block inside the text panel. The existing fixtures (manufactured by GE) are held in place by two phillips head screws. This type of fixture should continue to be used primarily only in the Gamma Module side text panels (or other places where space is restricted). An alternate type of unfinished fixture, also provided with the Zap spares, is held in place with metal brackets above and below the fixture, screwed to the text panel opening sides. These alternate type fixtures should be used as replacements wherever possible. These alternate type fixtures have replaceable starters and ballasts that should be checked if the fixture is not lighting. Obtain replacement starters or ballasts from Zap spares as needed.
It is recommended that power to the panels first be disconnected before replacing these fixtures.
